KPF Unveils Plans for a Mixed-Use Neighborhood in Seoul, South Korea

A new mixed-use neighbourhood planned for the South Korean capital of Seoul and meant to complement the surrounding natural elements and pay homage to Yongsan Park has been announced by international architecture firm KPF. In order to improve how the occupants perceive space, the 482,600 square metre complex is made up of a tiered outer shell that includes a variety of programmes and public amenities. Along with the residential units, the complex also has public areas, green spaces, and office, retail, and hospitality spaces.

The development's organisational form is based on the conventional model used in Korea, with residential buildings on the property connected by a central core of public areas and amenities. The hotel also connects a number of green areas that extend the nearby Yongsan Park vertically. Parkside Seoul's office area consists of seven interconnected buildings, each with a folded front modelled after the Han River's rippling waters.

To further strengthen the connection between the new district and Yongsan Park, a shopping strip lined with trees traverses the length of the neighbourhood. To create a harmonious experience for the inhabitants and guests, the design of the spaces takes into account materiality, texture, colour, shape, and size. Planning went into the practical combination of programmes to promote a vibrant and enjoyable neighbourhood.
