Wellness and Wellbeing at The Westin London City

Along the banks of the River Thames in London, The Westin opened its first hotel in the UK. The hotel features 5-star luxury throughout and boasts iconic riverside views. Created a gentle, relaxing lighting system to reflect the wellness that is the hotel's main focus.

Nulty collaborated with Dexter Moren Associates to design a layered lighting scheme for the venue, which is close to St. Paul’s Cathedral and the River Thames. It produces a serene, composed backdrop laced with drama.

Nulty Illuminates the Hotel Design

The entrance lobby, aptly named The Haven, spans three floors, and is basked in natural light. Track lighting around three sides of the atrium is angled to enhance a spectacular suspended paper installation that casts a dappled silhouette on the fourth grey wall, instilling tranquillity.

The 222 guestrooms' lighting design includes a number of incorporated lighting elements that are intended to cast a pleasant glow around items like the headboard. Cove lighting is used in the suites to interact with decorative chandeliers and lamps, with an emphasis on balancing levels of light. A dimming rotary dial dims all of the lights, allowing visitors to choose their own lighting levels and create their own lighting scenes.

Adjustable spotlights are integrated into a curved wood ceiling and positioned at varying heights in Hithe + Seek, a wine bar on the second floor. The light is hidden to follow the contours of the architectural ceiling, drawing the eye to a series of interlocking globe pendants that add character and intimacy to the space, especially after dark when the bar is visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The bar itself is a focal point, with integrated lighting within the joinery and graze lighting beneath the countertop to highlight the beauty of the stone.

Focussing on wellness – The spa, pool, and fitness area have been designed by Nulty to engulf guests in serenity and tranquillity. This meant paying close attention to the materials in the underground swimming pool by grazing light across the textured surfaces and using lines of illumination to frame and accentuate a series of recessed stone feature walls. Coffer lighting provides warm ambient light from above in the Heavenly Spa by Westin reception area, while diffuse lines of light in the ceiling and walls contribute to the space’s relaxed, intimate feel in the fitness centre.

The Heavenly Spa by Westin embodies a calming atmosphere thanks to the use of warm lighting in the reception’s ceiling cove and shelving. With horizontal linear grazes of light and recessed illuminated niches casting indirect light onto relaxing guests, the swimming pool area has minimal downlighting.
